Summer Learning Institute - June/July 2015

Incoming 1st & 3rd Graders Program

About the Summer Learning Institute

The Summer Learning Institute (SLI) is a powerful 4-week/half-day program designed to bridge essential proficiencies for students in literacy and mathematics. Eligible students entering grades 1 and 3 this fall will participate in fun, targeted learning activities with our highly skilled Ann Arbor teachers and University of Michigan Master’s Interns on a daily basis.

This experience helps to prepare students for success and prevents summer regression in basic skills that often occurs during the break. Transportation and daily snack will be provided for all participating students. Parents of eligible children are invited to attend a Parent Orientation to learn details about the program. Weekly parent workshops are also offered to encourage at-home support using best practices.

Date: June 29th - July 30th
Time: 8:30am - 12:30pm, Monday - Thursday
Location: Logan Elementary
Family Orientation: Wednesday June 10th at Logan, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Open House Wednesday, July 22nd from 6:00pm - 7:00pm

More than 300 students participate each year and eligibility is based on mastery of end-of-year learning outcomes in literacy and mathematics and the NWEA MAPS assessment. Teachers use these and other data points to make student recommendations. Regular attendance in the program is required and students with perfect attendance will receive a voucher for a free class from Community Education and Recreation. Success in the program is dependent on attendance. A commitment to attend the entire program is required for enrollment.

Many parents choose to enroll their children in the daily afternoon summer camp that follows. This exciting camp is offered through Community Education and Recreation Afternoon Summer Camp and is housed at Ann Arbor Open each afternoon. This program runs daily from 12:30pm – 4:00pm with extended care until 5:30pm.
