This Week In the Ann Arbor Public Schools

January 24, 2012

  • Five Ann Arbor Public School students have been selected as candidates for the 2012 Presidential Scholars Program.  There are three from Huron:  Emily Chang, Alexander T. Hassan and Lena M. Ji; and two from Pioneer:  Julia H. Chen and Caleb D. Stevens.
The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our Nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.  In 1979, the Program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.  Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the Nation’s highest honors for high school students.
Each nominated student must go through an application process.  Scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas – academic and artistic success, leadership, and involvement in school and the community – and represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth.  They are invited to Washington, D.C. in June to participate in National Recognition Weekend which includes many enrichment activities and events and culminates with the presentation to the students of the Presidential Scholars medallion during a ceremony sponsored by the White House.

  • Pioneer 12th grade student, Sherry Wan, took 1st place in the 2012 National Juried High School Metals Exhibition for her piece titled "Summer Solstice". The exhibition is a biennial event that highlights the accomplishments of students and teachers at the high school level and showcases how various media can be used to achieve artistic expression and to generate interest in and excitement about the fields of metal and enameling. This year’s juror was Robert Ebendorf, an esteemed metal-smith, jeweler and leader in the American studio jewelry movement. The exhibition will be held at Sheffield Wood Gallery between February 3, and March 23 , in Greenville South Carolina, and is sponsored by The Fine Art Center, a preeminent fine arts magnet high school also in Greenville. Ms. Wan won a two hundred dollar prize and a one hundred dollar gift certificate for the Pioneer High School Jewelry Program. After the exhibition, "Summer Solstice" will be exhibited locally at the Ann Arbor Art Center's Potential Show March 23 - April 22, and at the University of Michigan Slusser Art School in late May to early June.

  •  Something amazing happened at Huron on the past two Saturdays. Over 350 students voluntarily came to Huron on January 14 & 21, from 8:00-12:00 to study and prepare for their final exams. This was all planned by the Huron Rising Scholars under the direction and leadership of Mr. Brandon Jackson. The Rising Scholars Program collaborated with administration, teachers, parents, and the National Honor Society and Key Club to staff Saturday School with tutors.
Achievement Saturday School is a student led program intended to "narrow the achievement gap of all students at Huron."  Many students participated in planning this event.  Chelsea Mercer, a junior at Huron, set up meetings with all stakeholders to produce two weekends of student preparation for final exams.  On January 14th they hosted 127 students at Huron and on  January 21st they hosted 221 students -  in adverse weather.  This project allowed over 350 students the opportunity to prepare for finals!!!!!!  The event represented the entire student body and served both higher achieving students in AP and AC classes and students who are experiencing academic difficulty.
The organizers want to recognize  the wonderful parents who made breakfast for the volunteer students and staff!!!!  It was truly impressive to see that many caring young people and staff there on those Saturday mornings.  There were 1/4 of Huron’s staff members and 1/8 of Huron’s entire student body!!!!
