This 4th grade page is just the beginning for multiple links to marvelous sites for reading, writing, language arts and math. Use the large PURPLE arrow pointing to the right at the top and progress through websites for grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5 also.

There are multiple links to various levels of skill for each subject. A word of caution to parents that a few "games" for older children ask for an email address in order to "return game results". It is stated that email addresses are not kept. Writer's Block asks for your opinion and will post student responses. Parent supervision is recommended to teach students about this type of activity online. The website does state that when people use last names when submitting items, those items will not be posted.

READING WEBSITES

This is a wonderful resource even though it's a little tricky to understand how to use it. Be patient as you explore. I found the standard view the best. Blowing up the image may require you to "rearrange" the page so you can see everything, but I think it is worth it.

True to their reputation, this website has interesting graphics and stories of high interest for older readers. Sit down with your student and find out all sorts of fun information.

Updated weekly, students can read age appropriate items about science that is in the news.

This is also a wonderful site for current events. After visiting this site with them, you'll have a great springboard for discussion.

This is another reliable site for finding books using the same Guided Reading level system used by our literacy program.

WRITING WEBSITES

This is a WONDERFUL site for writers needing to focus on paragraph formation. Parents will have to preview the site so they can familiarize their students as to where the process begins on the page. The site explains the process of thinking about a given writing prompt, takes them through the pre-writing phase and offers tips along the way.

More advanced than the grade 3 activities, this challenges students with proper comma placement. This is excellent practice for your students.

This site lists spelling words, patterns and strategies for all elementary levels. There are puzzle areas, writing prompts, and other useful resources.

Combining keyboarding and spelling skills, this is an engaging program. Beware that the voicing of the spelling words can be unclear at times. There is a "replay" feature that will voice the words again.

This website has a collection of games for practicing different spelling patterns. Shockwave is required.

This website has various levels of activities. Practice pattern recognition through a game format.

KEYBOARDING WEBSITES

This is great short-term practice if you already have the keyboard learned. Only one letter is presented at a time. It's very quick, easy and straightforward. There is a stopwatch with which students can time themselves.

Rescue falling letters and words by typing them correctly on the keyboard. Three versions with adjustable skill levels makes this a challenge for anyone! There are preferences to set for speed and skill level. This is great for those wanting to practice upper and lower case typing with speed.

Very basic, but free, this website will be a good way to practice the one manual skill your student will use the rest of their life.

Similar in concept to what they have experienced at school, this program prompts students for the correct finger/key when mistakes are made. Students will experience a non-stop repetition of the line to type. It is straightforward except how to get the lessons started. After clicking on the "start the program" button, it will prompt you to paste text you would like to practice. However, if you click on the upper left-hand "lessons" button, you can pick your level. Letters are presented in a different order than what students may be used to, but that shouldn't present a problem.
