No Nut/No Tree Nut Policy
Food allergies are becoming more and more common. Although an individual could be allergic to any food, there are eight foods that account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions:
• peanuts
• tree nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts/filberts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts/pignolias, pistachio, walnuts, etc)
• milk
• egg
• fish
• shellfish
• soy, and
• wheat.
Sesame is quickly becoming the ninth major allergen. A person could have an anaphylaxis reaction if they have an allergy to these (or other) foods. Peanut allergies, however, are the most likely to cause death of all the major allergens. It is implicated as a trigger in 59% of associated deaths.
With the increasing number of peanut/tree nut allergic students, and its dire consequences, we are taking steps to insure the safety of our students. We therefore have a “NO PEANUTS/NO TREE NUTS” policy in our school. That means that students, staff, and anyone else entering Bryant Elementary School will not bring ANYTHING into the building that contains peanuts or tree nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts/filberts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts/pignolias, pistachio, walnuts, etc). We appreciate your diligence in upholding our “No Peanut/No Tree Nut” policy.
In addition to our No Peanut/No Tree Nut polity, we also have implemented "No Food” birthday celebrations at Bryant. With the alarming increase in obesity, diabetes, and food allergies in recent years, it is prudent to teach our students that we can celebrate a special occasion without food. There are many creative, fun things that can be done to celebrate this special day for your child at school without food, so please discuss the options with your child's teacher.
