It is the mission of the Clague Middle School Community to create a positive, safe, success-oriented learning environment, designed to meet the unique and challenging individual needs of all our students!
October 1, 2010
Thank you to all parents and guardians who have been coming to our meetings this September. There was a great turn out at the first Fun Night for grade 6. Many parents were in attendance for the meet and greet.
Upcoming Events for October
October is MEAP Month! Students will be taking the MEAP Test during the weeks of October 11- October 22. October 25-29 will be make-up week for students who were absent. It is very helpful if parents make sure students get to bed at a reasonable time and make sure that they have a hearty breakfast during this time period. Studies have shown that sleep and a good breakfast are the two biggest factors that affect testing.
October 12 - Parent Forum: Cyberbullying
Parent University, our parent information program is continuing this year. Our first program is on Tuesday, October 12, 7 PM. The topic is cyberbullying and the effect of the social networking systems on today's middle school student. This is something that should be attended by all parents. We hope to see you there.
Picture Re-Take Day
Picture re-take day is October 6th. If your child missed the first picture day during registration or if you need to have the picture redone, please remember this date. It is the only retake this year.
Next Fun Night and DC-Grade 8 News
October 15 is the all school Fun Night. It is sponsored by the 8th grade. If you are a parent of an 8th grade student, please donate concession stand items by bringing them to the main office. You can bring in items at any time. The items that are most needed include bottles of water, cans of pop, individually wrapped snacks/cookies/rice krispie treats, individual bags of chips and pretzels, as well as individually wrapped candy. If you prefer, a small donation to help buy pizza will also be accepted. The donation can be made out the Clague PTSO.
October 27 at 7 PM is the mandatory meeting of parents for our 8th grade students who are going to DC. Following the parent meeting will be a meeting of the parents who will be our chaperones.
Detention has begun after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students who need to serve a detention have one week to serve it after it is assigned. Students who do not serve their detention will be excluded from clubs, sport practices, and games. Please support our policy and help your child learn to be responsible.
Thank you for your patience with the bus situation this fall. It appears as though the buses are mostly on time now. Bus 83 has been running later but I have noticed that it is now here before all the other buses leave.
Welcome Back to 2010-11!
It is the end of the first week of school. I hope that everyone is being to settle in and feel at home. Lunches for grade six are going much better than we expected. What a great group of students! All of our classes look to be exceptional this year. As a staff we are looking forward to working with your child(ren). If you have any questions, please email me and I will try to get in a timely fashion. I have listed below a few notes you should know about.
The 8th grade DC trip fundraiser is still going on. You can buy a pack of Clague socks in white or black. The socks cost only $10 and can be purchased in the main office. You get three pairs of low socks or two pairs of knee-highs in each pack (white) and two pairs in each package black. Be Cool and wear your Cougarwear to School!
PBS, Positive Behavior Support, will be rolled out at Clague during this quarter. Before it begins, we want all parents to understand how everything work and what to expect. There will be an Information Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 PM in the auditorium. I hope you can join us!
Curriculum Night is on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010. We begin at 6 PM in the auditorium. The evening should end by 8:30 PM.
The 6th to 7th Math Test and the 7th to Algebra I test will be given on Tuesday, September 14 at 8 :15 AM. If you child is taking this test, you should have returned a signed permission slip.
We have a good problem at Clague, but a problem just the same. There have been many new students who have registered for this school year. Some of your children may have even mentioned at home how large their classes have become. We are currently working to switch some schedules to relieve the overcrowding. We will do our best to move students to other hours with the same team of teachers. This may not always be an option. We ask for your support and patience in this reorganization.
Registration is on Wednesday and Thursday, August 25 and 26. See the front page of Clague for exact times. This is an important part of the beginnning of your child's year. In addition to you dropping off all those forms, your child's yearbook picture is taken. Also, you can buy Clague spirit wear. The schedules are handed out and you can talk with your child's counselor. New students can walk through the school and find their classes and locker. It is also a time for Mrs. Hayes and I to welcome everyone back. We look forward to seeing you and the students.
Phones and Electronic Devices:
Phones are not allowed from when the student leaves the house until 3 PM and electronic devices are never allowed at school. There is a student phone available in the Blue House at all times. If it is necessary for a student to have a phone at school it should not be seen or heard. The staff is not responsibile for taking time to find missing phones or any missing electronic device (i-pod, MP3, gameboys, PSP, etc.). If an electronic device or cell phone is seen or heard it will be confiscated from the student and held in the main office until a parent physically comes to pick it up. While cell phones in use after 3 PM will not be taken, electronic devices are never allowed..... on the bus, before, during, after school or at any school activity. The problems with cell phones and digital media will be discussed by Public Safety Officers during a presentation on Tuesday, October 12 at 7 PM. Cyber-bullying, Internet safety, twitter, facebook, etc will all be disucussed. This very important parent information night should not be missed.
Positive Behavior Support:
Everyone was sent a brochure on the new behavior system that will be implemented this year at Clague. We encourage all parents to come Thursday, September 23 at 6:30 PM to see the presentation regarding this great program. Questions will also be answered at this time.
Curriculum Night: Sept. 16
Curriculum Night is your opportunity to quickly run through your child's schedule and meet his/her teachers. It begins with a welcome and short talk by the principal at 6 PM. We hope that you will join us.
Do you remember what it is like to be in middle school? If not, please join us on Thursday Oct. 7. You can come for all or part of the day. Bring your child's schedule and follow them through their classes and lunch. (Don't believe your child when they say no one else's parents are coming and you will embarrass them. We have lots of parents!)
New to Clague?
If you are new to Clague, the PTSO holds a meet and greet on Friday Sept. 24 from 6-8 PM. This also coinsides with our 6th grade only Fun Night. If you have a 6th grader they can come to our first fun night while you meet other 6th grade parents in our upstairs lobby. This is a great way to begin your year.
8th Grade DC Trip
The 8th grade students attend a trip to DC during the first week of November. If your child is attending this year's trip, parents need to attend the final preparation meeting on October 27 at 7 PM. You will get the itinerary, emergency numbers, list of what students need to bring and the rules for the trip. If you can't attend you must contact Mr. Johnson during this week to get important information,
Heroes in the Hallways
Heroes in the Hallways is a new club at Clague. The students who belong are ambassadors who encourage a welcoming and safe environment for all during passing time. They are our gatekeepers and peacekeepers. At the Honor's Assembly this week, the 30 students who are the founding members of this group were introduced to the school and received their offical "Heros" shirts. I hope that you encourage your children to join - or as they were told - at least become silent members as they they spread love and peace at school. They are charged with creating a better world for all. Students who have not served their detentions are not allowed to attend any Fun NIght.
email@example.com is a confidential email that students can write to describing negative behaviors, bad experiences, or report incidents of bullying that is occuring to themself or others. Students have been made aware of this site and some have already begun to use it. Clague is not tolerating bullying of any kind and will be severly disciplining the bullly as well as the by-stander. The students have been made well aware of our policy. The policy is in line with the district policy. We want an environment that is safe and welcoming to all students.
