Scooter Games

SCOOTER SCOOPBALL

In this game, the object is to hit the backboard with the whiffle ball, using your scoop.  At no time in this game can you use your hands!! You must always use your scoop to throw and catch the ball. You may only move around the gym without the ball in your scoop.  The ball must be passed across that line.  You may get as close to the backboard as you want.  When the ball hits the backboard, the team hitting the backboard gets a point.  When a point is scored, the other time gets the ball.  You may not knock the ball out of the scoop, either with your hand or scoop.  At all times you must be sitting on your scooter.

Scooter Kickball

Split the class into two teams.  One team is the kicking/scooter team and the other is the fielding team.  When everyone has had a chance to kick, then have the groups switch.  The person who is the kicker stands on the red square.  Everybody else on the kicking team is on a scooter on the side black line.  When the ball is kicked, the kicker runs to their scooter and the entire team scoots to the other side black line and back.  The fielding team is spread out on the other side of the gym.  When the ball is kicked, the kids that don't get the ball, run and form a line.  The person who gets the ball, runs to the front of the line and passes the ball to everyone in line.  If the ball gets to the end of the line before the scooting team makes it back to their line, the fielding team wins.  If the scooter team makes it back to their line before the ball makes it to the back of the line, the scooting team wins.  You can have the scooter team go on their bottom or stomach and go forward or backwards.

Scooter Basketball

  • Split the class into 2 teams
  • Half the team are on scooters, the other half are shooters.
  • Set-up a circle (using cones) on the free throw, on both sides of the gym.  Place a milk crate inside each circle.  This is what the shooters will shoot at.
  • Scatter whiffle balls all over the gym.
  • Shooter must shoot from behind the black lines that make up the outline of the basketball court.
  • Scooters job is to throw whiffle balls to the shooters, so that they can shoot.  Scooters can't go inside the cones.
  • Shooters must catch ball in order to shoot.
  • If shooters shoot from inside line or without catching the ball, they lose 5 points.
  • Scooters can go anywhere in the gym to get balls.
  • Place jerseys in each crate to prevent whiffle balls from bouncing out.
  • One team must wear jerseys.
  • Give students a chance to be shooters and scooters.  Can switch multiple times.
Thanks to Rick Dekeon over at Northside for this game.

Scootermania

Before beginning the activity, discuss with students what the word "cooperation" means.  Remind them that it involves communicating with others in a positive way, as well as working together nicely.  Let them know the activity they will be doing requires them to cooperate with a partner in order to get something done, and it will involve scooters.  The goal of the activity is for the student on the scooter board to transport one yarn ball at a time from a pile in a hoop in one designated area to a hoop in another designated area as he/she rides upon the scooter.  The other partner must use his/her creativity to discover a safe and fun way to pull the scooter board rider.
