WELCOME TO ANN ARBOR HURON ATHLETICS!

We would like to invite all Huron students to be a part of our interscholastic athletic program. The Huron athletic program offers a variety of men’s, women’s, and co-ed sports (34 total) in three seasons: fall, winter, and spring. Many of our teams do not reduce squad size and keep everyone who is willing to make a commitment to the program. Some teams, however, do make cuts but with the diversity of sports offered and levels available (varsity, junior varsity, freshman), most students who have the interest and ability to participate can be accommodated.

High school sports are not just for the athlete who is above average in skills and talent. In fact, only a small percentage of high school athletes continue to play in college. The high school team is a place for students to participate and grow. A student’s commitment to a team is part of what makes the cooperative learning of high school sports a valuable and rewarding experience.

Many ninth graders are unsure of the big school experience and believe they would be better off waiting to get involved in school athletics until after their first year, once they have established themselves academically. Data that we have collected shows conclusively that ninth grade students who participate in sports achieve higher grades than others, have better attendance, receive fewer incompletes and failing grades, and develop higher self-esteem. Furthermore, students who play more than one sport, on average, earn higher grades than those who are on one team, only. Our studies show that participation in school activities helps students at all levels perform better in the classroom.

We don’t mean to paint a false picture. Sometimes being on a team means that an athlete will experience disappointment, frustration, fatigue, anger, and may want to quit. Sometimes they may get injured or may wonder why they ever thought about being on a team. When all is said and done, however, the experiences that a student athlete gains and the lessons they learn last a lifetime.

If you are a student who is thinking about going out for a team but is reluctant or has questions, we encourage you to stop by the Athletic Department office and talk with our staff. We want to reassure you that it is in your best interest to get involved in our athletic program and that everyone can benefit from the cooperative learning experiences that go along with being on a team.

Learning to trust others comes from open relationships inside closed groups. We mean it when we say we’d rather see you on the field than in the bleachers. When we say “Go Rats”, we aren’t talking to other people. We mean you! Enjoy the distinction of being one of the best. Welcome to Huron athletics!
