FAQs For Freshman ParentsQ: I’m concerned about my student’s safety in such a large building. What measures does Huron take? What should I speak about with my student? Huron employs Community Assistants to monitor student behavior from 7:00am until 3:30pm. In addition, we have a School Police Liaison Officer, Mark Purcell, who is assigned to Huron. Administrators have daily supervision assignments, as well. Students have been instructed repeatedly to approach any adult in the building if they are concerned about their safety or if they are being bothered. Students are also reminded to keep their book bags with them at all times and to avoid leaving their belongings unattended. Q: Homecoming is coming up. What is the dance like? The dance takes place from 8:00pm until 11:00pm, in the Student Cafeteria. Lights are subdued and we monitor behavior and dancing very consistently. Parents may volunteer by contacting the Senior Class Office. Please check the Huron website for printed guidelines on dance behavior. A printed copy is available thru any class office. Q: My son/daughter received a Red Pass. What is that? Attendance in class is directly tied to achievement. In collaboration with Huron teachers, community assistants and administrators, students are allowed 3 red passes (tardies) each 9 weeks. The fourth red pass results in communication to the parent. The fifth offense, the student is sent to ISS for the period and the parent is called for a meeting. Each 9 weeks, the slate is wiped clean. Further concerns regarding attendance can result in attendance contracts and suspension. Q: Can my son/daughter use a cell phone at school? I like my student to be able to contact me. Cell phones must be TURNED OFF AND PUT AWAY DURING CLASS OR IT WILL BE CONFISCATED BY THE TEACHER AND GIVEN TO THE CLASS ADMINISTRATOR. Q: What is the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook? The Student Code of Conduct was mailed to every home in the District. Expectations for behavior, and consequences for poor choices are outlined. Q: Wow! The traffic is really busy before school. What’s the best way to drop off my student? Get here early and avoid the rush, if you can. The busiest time is between 7:20 and 7:30. Please drop your student at the curbside, and pull as far forward as possible. Many students take the school bus, which assists with timeliness and safety. Q: My student’s locker keeps getting jammed and we’ve lost the student ID. Where should my student go for help? Send your student to see Ms. Brown or Mrs. Menzies at the General Office. People are available to “un-jam” a locker. Repair requests are made the General Office, as well. Replacement Ids are purchased at the General Office for $10.00. Q: My student might be approached to drink alcohol and/or use drugs. Prevention and talking are your best offense. If you suspect your student is in trouble with either, we can provide you with a list of resources for your family to consider. |
