What is COE or School-to-Work?

Any high school student 16 years older who is placed on a job and has a contract between school and employer. This applies to COE, School-to-Work, Work Experience, and Internship programs coordinated through the COE office at Huron High School.

Student involved with the COE program are also enrolled in a Related Instruction course. In this class they are receiving training similar to the work they are performing on the job site. The coordination of the classroom and on-site training is the unique characteristics of COE.

General Information

The minimum age of employment of minors is 14 years old (there are exceptions)*. Teenage workers who are not exempt from the Youth Employment Standards Act must have a work permit before beginning work. Work permits can be obtained at the Huron High School. The completed work permit must be kept on file by the employer as long as the student is employed.

A work permit may be revoked for poor academic performance.

Types of Work

Teenagers (14-17) covered by the Act may not work in any occupation determined to be hazardous. This may include but is not limited to: contact with hazardous substances, driving (delivery driver), work as an outside helper, work on construction sites*, and occupations that involve power driven equipment*.
