FAQs FOR PARENTS OF HURON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Q: What is the grade-level meeting?
A: The PTSO has experimented with several meeting options and, last year, hit on a successful approach by focusing on the needs of each specific grade. Working with Dr. Williams and the class administrators, PTSO arranges and sponsors four fall evening meetings –one for each grade to provide information and answers to questions of parents at each grade level. For example, the 9th grade meeting features information on tutoring; behavior at school dances, and participation in athletics while junior parents heard about SAT and ACT test taking, resume help and college planning. Informal, roundtable meetings are also held in the spring as parents look forward to the following year. PTSO Meeting Calendar
Q: What is capsule night?
A: Capsule night is the opportunity to meet your student’s teachers by following a shortened schedule. Capsule night is held each year at the beginning of the school year. Refer to the school calendar for specific dates and times.
The Guidance Department will usually have a short presentation on their Comprehensive Guidance Program from 6:30-7:00 pm. The Capsule Night Program will begin sharply at 7:00 pm with a short musical presentation by the A Cappella Choir.
A PTSO representative will make a few remarks, followed by the Principal’s report. Each class is twelve minutes long; 1st period begins at 7:35 p.m. Your student will provide you with a class schedule to follow.
The focus of each class will be an overview of the course and expectations for success. Counselors will be available in their offices, and administrators will be in the cafeteria and hallways. Student guides will assist parents in finding rooms.
Q: When are parent-teacher conferences?
A: Conferences are scheduled in the fall usually the second or third week of October. Check the school calendar for specific dates and times. Additional dates are in November and then again in April. (See school calendar)
Sign ups for conferences in person sign-up for the Oct, Nov and April conferences will be held in the administrative lobby from 7:45 am - 7:30 pm (refer to school calendar for specific dates and times).
Q: How do I contact teachers?
A: There are lots of ways to communicate with teachers about your student’s progress. Use them!
EMAIL: The majority of Huron teachers provide their email addresses at the beginning of the school year. Email addresses are also available on the AAPS website and from each grade office. Feel free to email your questions throughout the school year. You can expect a response within a few days. A directory with emails for faculty is posted on the website at http://www.aaps.k12.mi.us/huron.directory.
PHONE CALLS: Call your student’s teacher and leave a message so he/she can call you back. Leave the date of your message and the best date, time and phone number to return your call.
PERSONAL CONTACT: Arrange to meet with your student’s teacher during his/her planning time throughout the school year. Meetings need to be arranged in advance directly with the teacher. At capsule night faculty will give parents more information about how to contact them.
