TEEN DRIVER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED
The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute is
conducting a year-long research study examining how newly licensed teen
drivers drive and acquire knowledge about driving. We hope to recruit
about 40 teen drivers from Ann Arbor high schools as subjects for the study.
Subjects in the study will be given a Honda Accord for their use over
a period of about 14 weeks. They will be expected to use this vehicle
in place of the vehicle that they would normally drive. They will be
free to drive the Honda wherever and whenever they choose, as long as
they stay within the continental U.S.
Other details:
- We are recruiting 16 year olds with at least 6 months experience on their level two license. If an interested individual does not yet have the requisite amount of experience, they may still contact us as the program will continue for a full year.
- Parents and teens will need to spend about 1.5 hours at UMTRI in an orientation session.
- When a subjects return the car after approximately 14 weeks of use, they will need to spend about 1.5 hours at UMTRI in a debriefing session.
- A payment of $100 will be made to each subject at the completion of the study.
- The vehicle will be heavily instrumented in order to observe driving behavior accurately (although this will not be apparent to the driver). There will be five video cameras installed on the car; some of these video cameras will record the drivers as well as passengers in the vehicle.
- All data, including video will be handled confidentially and in accordance the policies for human-subject research of the University of Michigan.
If interested, please contact Mary Lynn Buonarosa, Engineering Research Associate, mlmeff@umich.edu

ONLINE SURVEY REQUEST:: PROTECT THE HURON at www.hrwc.org/survey
The Huron River Watershed Council (HRWC) and several communities in Washtenaw and Livingston Counties have teamed up to launch an online survey at www.hrwc.org/survey to learn what watershed residents think about the quality of our local water and individual efforts to protect it. The survey takes about ten minutes to complete and participants can register for a chance to win one of ten $25 gift cards or a Flip video camera. The prize drawing will be held at the survey’s close in early February 2012. The questions are designed to help HRWC and the participating communities evaluate their water pollution outreach and education efforts. Results will inform such projects as the Watershed Community Calendar, a biannual piece that offers striking photos of the Huron River watershed and monthly tips for preventing pollution. The calendar has been distributed to about 38,000 residents every other year since 2003. A 2012 version is currently available for free by contacting HRWC, www.hrwc.org.The data will be compared to a similar regional survey that was mailed to homeowners in a seven county area in Southeastern Michigan back in 2004. HRWC is hoping for responses from at least 400 residents of Washtenaw and Livingston Counties respectively, from people who live in rural areas and those in larger urban communities in the watershed. For questions please contact Pam Labadie at HRWC, plabadie@hrwc.org or (734) 769-5123 x 602.www.hrwc.org
