This Month's Sport?....HOCKEY!

Hockey is a sport that originated in Canada. Hockey is played on a sheet of ice called a "rink." In order to play the game, you need to have two goals, an ice rink, one stick for each player, ice skates, and a puck. The object of the game is for one team to score more goals than the other. A goal is scored when a player from either team hits the puck with their stick into their opponents net. If the puck goes into the net the team that put it there gets one point. The game begins with a face off, a face off is used to restart the game after a goal is scored by either team. At the end of three twenty minute periods the team scoring the most goals wins the game. Each team has five skaters and a goalie. The goalie protects his or her teams goal, and wears BIG pads to protect their body from being injured by the puck. Usually each team is set up so that two players are defenders, there also is a center and two forwards called wings, a left wing and a right wing.

SKILLS THAT ARE NEEDED TO PLAY THE GAME OF HOCKEY

Ice skating - Hockey players need to be good skaters so they can move up and down the rink quickly.

Stick handling - Hockey players need to be good at stick handling, this is how you move the puck in hockey by using the stick to move the puck up and down the rink. You need to use the back of the stick, the front of the stick, and should be able to shoot and stop the puck well while using your stick.

PASSING - A hockey player should know how to pass the puck to teammates. Hockey is a team game, and every player should use their team mates to help in winning the game. Some passes in hockey are, the Drop pass, Lead pass, and forward pass

SHOOTING - There are two basic shots in hockey, the "slap shot" and the "wrist shot" - The slap shot is a hard shot towards the goal, and a wrist shot is one that uses more pin point accuracy.
