Green Adventures Camp 2012
Green Adventures Camp Zero Waste Lunch and Snack Campaign
Dear GAC families,
In 2009 GAC committed to serving zero waste snacks. Summer camps and after school programs have notoriously used disposable plates, bowls, cups, forks, spoons, and napkins to serve snacks. This summer GAC will continue with our zero waste campaign and will again serve all snacks with reusable items. It takes some effort to properly clean and sanitize these items but we feel it is well worth it and goes hand in hand with the message we hope to deliver to your children about doing all we can to take care of Planet Earth together.
We also hope you can do the same with the lunches your children come to GAC with. It has been estimated that on average a single school-age child generates 67 pounds of lunchtime waste per school year, or 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for one average-size elementary school. This is but a symptom of a U.S. throwaway culture that needs attention, especially in the area of food packaging. U.S citizens, for example, throw out an estimated 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. When planning lunches for GAC, other camps, and school next year please help minimize food and packaging waste by packing a zero waste lunch.
A Zero Waste Lunch
* Lunches in reusable containers
* Drinks in a thermos or reusable container
* A cloth napkin
* Reusable utensils when needed
* A reusable lunchbox
At GAC we will be weighing all our waste (garbage, recycling, and compost) everyday. This will be charted in our main camp room. So please, when you have some time see how we’re doing. Please help us succeed in our zero waste campaign!
