Meet Our Language Instructors

Clara Gonzalez has been teaching Spanish for over 20 years, including 10 years for Rec & Ed. She was born in Bogata, Columbia, Sra. and received her BA in Sociology and Spanish from Eastern Michigan University.

Clara enjoys teaching Spanish because she feels that learning a foreign language is like opening a door to another culture. She draws on her own experience in learning a second language to help her students feel comfortable acquiring new skills.

Marian Laughlin has been teaching with Rec & Ed since 2005. She has a Masters in Secondary Education from U of M with an endorsement for teaching French language. She is a long time resident of Ann Arbor.

Alice Chang is a native of Taiwan and came to the US in 1987. She holds a Masters degree from Purdue University. She has been teaching Chinese language classes for Rec & Ed since 2004.

Kiyoe Ise came to this country as a visiting student over 40 years ago. She has taught Japanese language classes for Rec & Ed for 15 years.

Stephanie Wichmann teaches ESL classes. She holds a Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and currently teaches English as a second language to adults in the community education, and college settings. She also teaches English Composition at a local college.

Chloe Miller teaches Italian language and culture classes. She lived and worked in Florence, Italy for four years. She has a BA in Italian language and literature from Smith College and an MFA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College. She is a poet and often writes about Italy. She also teaches writing online for two universities.
