School Procedures
This page contains Scarlett's school procedures. They are presented here as common questions.
When you arrive as school...
Students are asked to wait outside in front of the building when the weather is above freezing (32 degrees). During inclement (bad) weather, students will be permitted to wait in the school lobby. Students who wish to participate in early morning gym activities or purchase a breakfast may proceed to the gym or to the cafeteria. Students will wait until the 8:00 am bell rings before going to lockers and to class. (See school bell schedule).
If you ride a bus to school...
School bus transportation is provided for Scarlett students who live 1 1/2 miles or more from school. Students are assigned to a specific bus. Questions regarding bus transportation should be directed to 994-2330.
School buses leave from the building immediately after school. However, four days a week, students who participate in after-school clubs and other activities may ride the activities bus home. This bus leaves at 4:00 pm each day. Students must have a bus pass issued by the staff member who supervised the after-school activity.
About your locker ...
You will be issued a locker by grade level locations. Each has a combination lock built in and is safe if used properly. You should not tell anyone your locker combination! Your advisor teacher or your grade secretary will have a copy of your locker combination in case you forget it. Lockers should not be shared! If you have any locker problems, you should notify your advisor teacher or your grade secretary. Nothing should be attached to the inside of your locker that cannot be easily removed at the end of the school year.
In the cafeteria ...
A hot lunch is served each day and consists of a main dish, read item, milk, plus two of the following: salad, vegetable, fruit, juice. In addition, there are separate salads and desserts which you may purchase at extra cost. You should pay the cashier each day at the time food is purchased or purchase a lunch ticket in 0ne-week, two-week, or four-week combinations. They are to be purchased in the cafeteria during the lunch period (Checks should be made payable to the Scarlett Middle School Cafeteria). Free lunch applications are available in each grade office and are to be turned in to the cafeteria cashier. You may also bring lunch from home, but it must be eaten in the cafeteria.
After eating, leave your area clean and follow staff directions for recycling. All food must be eaten in the cafeteria. If you make special arrangements to eat outside of the cafeteria, you must have a pass from your teacher or supervising adult. Failure to follow cafeteria rules will result in removal from the cafeteria and appropriate disciplinary action will be determined..
If you are absent...
Your parent/guardian should call your grade office the morning of the absence to report it. If this phone contact is not made, the grade secretary will call your home. If no phone contact is made at all, you must bring a note to the grade office signed by your parent explaining the reason for your absence.
If you know ahead of time that you are going to be absent, bring a note signed by your parent to your grade office. This note should state the date(s) and reason for your absence. You will then be given a form to use to notify your teachers of the absence and to collect assignments for the time you will be gone.
If you are absent for more than one school day, your parent/guardian may call your grade office and request homework assignments to be collected from your teachers.
If you are tardy to school...
You are expected to be on time to all your classes. If you are delayed by a staff member, make sure you get a pass signed by the staff member with "EXCUSED" written on it. If your tardiness is unexcused, you should report to class. Your teacher will record the unexcused tardy. Repeated unexcused tardies will result in a discipline referral.
If you have to leave during the day...
Your parent/guardian should call your grade office or send a note with you to take to the grade office telling the grade secretary the time that you must leave school and the time you will return This note should be given to your grade secretary first thing in the morning. In addition, you need to sign in and out of the building with your grade secretary upon leaving and returning to school.
If you get sick or injured at school...
You should tell your teacher about the illness or injury. Your teacher will direct you to your grade office or to the clinic. One of the secretaries will call your parent/guardian to pick you up. You should never just call your parent/guardian if you are ill or injured. You should always let someone at school know that you feel sick or that you have been injured. Also, you need to remember to sign out with your grade secretary if you are leaving school.
If you need to take medication at school...
If you need to take medication during the school day, have your parent/guardian talk to your grade level secretary about appropriate forms and procedures that must be followed. All medication is to be kept in the grade offices and students are not permitted to ask anyone on the school staff for medicine. Staff are not allowed to give any medicine to students.
If you need to make a telephone call...
There is a pay phone available in the school lobby. Students are permitted to use this phone after school hours only. If you must make an emergency phone call during the school day, check with your grade secretary. Make sure you have a signed hall pass from your classroom teacher and a legitimate emergency.
If you find or lose something...
Items found in the school should be turned in to the main office. If you lose something, you should report the loss to your grade secretary and check the lost and found in the main office for several days. There is also a form you can fill out about the lost item.
If you lose or damage a textbook or a library book...
Your textbooks will be issued by your teachers. Therefore, if one of your textbooks is lost or damaged, you should report it to the teacher who issued it to you. You are responsible for all books issued to you. You will be charged for any lost or damaged textbook or library book.
If there is a fire drill or tornado drill...
Your teachers will give you complete instructions about these drills. Information about each type of drill is posted in every classroom. Be sure to know the proper places to go from each of your rooms when you hear the fire or tornado alarms.
If you wonder whether school is closed due to bad weather...
School closing information will be announced over these radio stations: WAAM (1600AM), WJR (760AM), WUOM (91.7FM). Also turn on your television set to Channel 2, 4 or 7.
