Response to Colonialism in Art,

Literature, and Music

For students: How to write a reflection

Students must choose a combined total of 20 credits from the following categories:

- Poems are worth 1 credit

- Songs are worth 1 credit

- Novels are worth 15 credits

- A piece of art is worth 1 credit

- Field trip to UMMA is worth 5 credits

- Non-fiction readings are worth 1-4 credits depending on length

All materials can be found on Mr. Peterson’s website with the exception of novels that can be checked out from him or from a library.

If you would like to use something not on the website, it must be pre-approved by Mr. Peterson (or Ms. Cain in 2nd or 3rd period).

In order to receive credits, students must write a reflection in the following format:

Artist, Title, Country of Origin

Summary or description of piece:

Other info that you found about the piece:

Connection to Colonialism:

How does the artist/author respond to Colonialism?

The length of the reflection is based on the number of credits that piece is worth. For each credit, the reflection should be at least 30+ words.

For example: If you go to the museum, it is worth 5 credits. Therefore, the reflection should be 150+ words (5 credits X 30+ words = 150+ words).

If you have additional questions, please see Mr. P. or Ms. Cain.
