"A college education is expensive, but the alternative is worse and more costly.

It's too expensive not to go to school. Everyone can afford to go to school."

Course Introduction
Career Cruising is an elective course for 7th and 8th grade students. It's an important class because it allows students to see real world examples of how education, or lack of education will impact their future. Michigan is in a period of dynamic change at the moment, and the good paying jobs of yesteryear that did not require a skill or education are going the way of the dinosaur
, EXTINCT!

The good paying jobs of tomorrow will all require a skill or education. Career Cruising allows students to explore careers, and the education and / or skills necessary for these careers. Topics covered during this class include: careers, type of classes students should take, colleges / universities / trade schools and how much they cost, and what students can expect for a salary in each career. Students may be given the opportunity to interview people in their chosen field to get a first hand perpsective on what the chosen career is all about if time permits. Students will also do a real world simulation in which they will be expected to demonstrate that they can live on their career's salary.

Expectations

  • Give your best effort
  • Come to class on time and prepared to work
  • Be respectful / work well with others
  • Be responsible for own learning / behavior

Grading
Activities will be turned in as they are finished.  The activities will be graded on effort and the quality of the work.  Effort will count for 60%, while quality will count for 40% of the grade. Periodically student grades will be posted by the last 3 digits of your student ID. It is the student's responsibility to make sure all assignments are turned in and graded.  I expect all students to get no lower than a B in my class.

Passes
Each student will be granted up to four passes over nine weeks. Students must sign out their pass and use their school planner when going out in the hall. Passes may be used for: tardies, going to the restroom, getting a drink, or to make a phone call.  After all four passes have been used, the student may only use these privileges at the cost of one half hour of work, to be determined between the student and the teacher.  Any unused passes are worth 5 points each.  If you use no passes, you will be given the equivalent of two days of assignments for extra credit.
